Studying for the theatre degree at Manchester University, I learned the techniques of voice projection, breath control, and how to bring written words to life for an audience. Those skills deepened when I co-founded the Manchester Live Poet's Society, performing poetry in pubs and clubs across the city. We published a book together, and my poems won the BBC Alfred Bradley Prize - recognition that taught me how powerfully the spoken word can move an audience. Those skills - honed for the stage and the microphone - would eventually circle back to their origins at the ambo.
