ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Donal Thompson: Bringing Words to Life
My journey to serving as a Catholic lector began as a child, when I first stepped up to read at church. But the path from there to where I am now has been anything but conventional.
My journey to serving as a Catholic lector began as a child, when I first stepped up to read at church. But the path from there to where I am now has been anything but conventional.
Studying for the theatre degree at Manchester University, I learned the techniques of voice projection, breath control, and how to bring written words to life for an audience. Those skills deepened when I co-founded the Manchester Live Poet's Society, performing poetry in pubs and clubs across the city. We published a book together, and my poems won the BBC Alfred Bradley Prize - recognition that taught me how powerfully the spoken word can move an audience. Those skills - honed for the stage and the microphone - would eventually circle back to their origins at the ambo.
But first came a long spiritual journey. I explored Buddhism, connected with the Bahá'í community, and spent years seeking understanding across different faith traditions. That interfaith experience gave me profound respect for sacred texts and the responsibility of proclaiming them. When I returned to Catholic practice and to the ministry of lector, I approached it with fresh eyes - not taking it for granted, but recognizing it as a true privilege.
As a lector, I've experienced the nervousness of approaching the microphone, the challenge of unfamiliar biblical names, the responsibility of proclaiming God's Word to the assembly. As an educational consultant and content creator, I've spent decades helping people communicate more effectively. This guide brings both experiences together.
Living in Los Molinos, Spain, and serving in a multinational parish showed me that lectors everywhere face the same challenges, regardless of language and culture. That's why I've translated this guide into seven languages - because confident, well-prepared lectors strengthen the liturgy in every Catholic community worldwide.
My work in education includes video production for major publishers, scriptwriting, and executive coaching. I've also authored materials for English language learning and Irish cultural education. But this guide for lectors remains my most personal project - because it serves the ministry I practice and the spiritual journey that led me back to the lectern.
